Mrs. Sbordy's First Grade Class Charlton St. School
"Children are made readers on the
laps of their parents"
- Emelie Buchwald
Welcome to First Grade! My name is Mrs. Sbordy.
I am so excited about the year ahead!
There is so much to learn!
We will be reading many fiction and non fiction books this year.
I encourage you to read with your child every night.
We are presently in our 5th Unit in National Geographic, our reading series. In this unit, we are focusing on animals and how they grow, move, and change. We will learn about non fiction text features and how they help us to find information in nonfiction texts.
In Math, our focus for the third unit will be on place value.
We will also be working on solving word problems using a variety of strategies and a process called "Math Mess". When using "Math Mess", your child will draw a
- Model, write an
- Equation ( including a ? for the unknown number),
- Solve the probem by showing their work, write a
- Statement to answer the question in the word problem, and write a sentence to eplain how he/she solved the problem.
Should you need to contact me, please call Charlton St. School at 508-764-5475,
